She Art Story
Created from the original art work of our founder, Coreena Kornel, the “She Art” female empowerment line of print products.
The process upon which they are created is highly intuitive. I love that I get to shut my brain off for this process, and feel my way through what is to happen next. I start with a colour pallet I wish to incorporate, then embark on the journey of adding layer upon layer to the background until it feels complete. The next layers to unfold are those that make up the girl's body, clothing, and hair.
Once the artwork is complete, she will sit for a couple of days while I patiently wait for her to reveal to me what it is she wants to say. While her words flow through me and are shaped by my lessons and personal experiences, it is always a surprise to me what statement she wishes to declare as her own personal truth.
I often get asked about the phrases being in the past tense. My inspiration for that is this… Life often serves us up periods of darkness, troubled times and adversity.
While I am a huge believer that the best way to get through the muck is to face it head on, I am not oblivious to the fact that sometimes it is really fucking hard… and sometimes, when we get through a period of adversity, we look back and think…”WOW, how the heck did I make it through all THAT?!”
The messages on our She Art are precisely how I made it through my own periods of dark and troubled times. While each piece is super personal and represents my triumphs over adversity, the messages on these pieces are universal and relatable by others who are making their way through their own life journey.
What I love THE MOST about this idea that we are able to relate to each other through messages of triumph over adversity, without knowing a single thing about each other, is that it shows me that we are far more alike than we are different.
In these divisive times, where the human experience has lead us to a place in history where we venomously disagree on SO MANY things, under all the opinions… those to the left and those to the right… it is clear that we are all way more alike than we are different… and in the end, that gives me hope.
